    Miami Beach Senior High

     

    Purpose:

    The goal of this course is to further develop the abilities of the Spanish student with the four essential skills of language: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Students will engage in activities designed to prepare them to progress into the regular Spanish curriculum through the use of authentic media and literature. The Florida Sunshine State Standards will guide this course and will address some of the following performance outcomes:

    Vocabulary / Grammatical Structures:

    ·  Uses appropriate career related vocabulary.

    ·  Uses appropriate vocabulary in academic, vocational, and social situations in oral and written form.

    ·  Uses synonyms and antonyms commonly associated with the vocabulary learned.

    ·  Identifies denotative and connotative meaning of words.

    ·  Organizes information into logical sequences of events.

    ·  Uses regular verbs and auxiliaries (simple present/ present progressive, simple past/ past progressive, can/ can’t, could/ couldn’t, going to + verb, irregular past.)

    ·  Identifies and uses nouns, pronouns and adjectives.

     Reading / Literature:

    ·  The student reads by contracting meaning from narrative and visual texts.

    ·  Distinguishes between fiction and non- fiction.

    ·  Identifies characteristics of a short story, poem, drama, and novel.

    ·  Identifies main characters, plot, setting, conflict, narrator’s point of view, mood, and suspense in a short story.

    ·  Identifies similarities and differences between the main characters if short stories.

    ·  Identifies the stated or implied main idea or message in a poem.

    ·  List events in a paragraph or story.

    ·  Identifies poetic devices and conventions in simple poems 

    Writing / Study skills:

    ·  The student will engage in writing activities that will demonstrate clarity and understanding appropriate to their level.

    ·  Writes a variety of simple and compound sentences using appropriate Spanish word order and punctuation.

    ·  Writes paragraphs in which information is given in support of one topic; details are arranged in order of importance; and connecting words or phrases show relationships.

    ·  Plans and writes expository, narrative, descriptive, or imaginative paragraphs.

    ·  Uses correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation in compositions.

    ·  Follows a set of written directions.

    ·  Demonstrates ordering, subordinating, and/or classifying words and phrases on a given topic.

    ·  Organizes information using sequencing, cause and effect, inference, and/or generalizations to complete written assignments.

    Listen / Speaking:

    ·  Demonstrates appropriate listening, speaking, and viewing skills in a variety of cooperative settings.

    ·  Demonstrates through discussion and questioning the appropriate use off specific vocabulary and syntax (arrangement and relationship of words)

    ·  Summarizes and retells a story after listening to it.

    ·  Demonstrates competence in reading aloud from a variety of sources.

    ·  Prepares and delivers a brief oral presentation.

    ·  Memorizes and recites an excerpt from a literary selection.

    ·  Organizes, design, and conducts a simulated job interview.

    The Year at a Glance: 

    This class is for annual credit and it is a graduation requirement. It is designed to prepare students in their mastery of the Spanish language. Grammar, mechanics and an exploration of the varied forms of written and spoken Spanish will be covered.

     

    Scholastic Requirements

    ·  Attendance and class participation are required for successful completion of course requirements.  You have 48 hours to make up work following an excused absence.

    ·  Ten unexcused absences translate into an “F” or NG (no grade) for the final grade.

    ·  Work is due on the day specified.  Failure to do so results in a “0.”

    ·  All assignments count toward your final average.

    ·  Students are expected to maintain notebooks and class folders in premium condition. 

     

    Academic Integrity Policy

    ·  Please include the following statement on all tests, quizzes, homework assignments, papers, and projects:                                                                                     

    “The work contained here is my own. I neither gave nor received any unauthorized aid or assistance”

     

    Cheating

    ·  Cheating is defined as “the giving or receiving of unauthorized information to gain an unfair advantage in your work.”  Cheating includes, but is not limited to, plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined as “the act of taking the language, thoughts, or ideas of another, including works of art and music, and presenting them as one’s own without acknowledgement.”

     

    Consequences of Cheating/Plagiarism

    ·  FIRST OFFENSE: “F” on the assignment. “F” in conduct for the quarter.  Immediate referral to administration for consideration of additional actions.  All other teachers of the students will be notified as well as the student’s coaches, faculty advisors and counselors. A Parent-teacher-counselor conference must be scheduled.

    ·  SECOND OFFENSE: A second offense means any second cheating or plagiarism event in the same academic year even if the second offense occurs in a different class, it will be considered a second offense. The consequences of a second offense are: “F” for the academic year in the subject in which the second offense occurs. A referral to administration will be written for consideration of additional action.

     

    Grading Scale

    ·  The official Miami Dade County School Board grading scale will be followed in this class.

    Contract

    I will obey the rules and will have no problems. However, if I choose to disobey, I will take appropriate action that may include but not be limited to: parent contact, detention, conduct cuts, referrals. In addition, any student caught cheating will automatically receive and “F” in conduct and a double “0” for that task.
