SCHOOL YEAR 2018-2019
GUIDELINES FOR PLACEMENT IN THE PRE-IB SCHOLARS ACADEMY
Students applying for the Pre-IB Scholars Academy in 8thgrade need to complete an application, show evidence of the ability to maintain a “B” average in their core subjects, and MUST have completed the high school level of Honors Algebra 1 and Physical Science. Students who have not passed FSA Reading may not be able to be placed in order to schedule the required Intensive Reading class. Students who have not completed Florida EOC exams at their previous school are also required to complete all testing requirements when announced by the Testing Department. In addition, our non-feeder pattern school students must include a copy of their current report card or credit analysis.
Applications will be accepted from November 1st, 2017 until January 15th, 2018, and applicants will be notified in March. Applications for students who have not completed the above requirements will be denied enrollment in the Scholars Academy but can still be enrolled in appropriate classes at MBSH. Any student who enrolls in Florida Virtual School (FLVS) to complete these classes in 8thgrade and has received the denial letter must show proof of satisfactory completion at least two weeks prior to the opening of school to be placed in the appropriate math or science class and will be moved into Scholars Academy as space permits. Acceptance into the Scholars Academy is contingent upon enrollment at MBSH. We are not a magnet school, so non-resident students must apply for and be granted a transfer through MDCPS. Acceptance into the Scholars Academy does not guarantee a transfer from a student’s home school.
SCHOLARS ACADEMY PLACEMENT AFTER 9THGRADE
Continuing placement in the Scholars Academy requires maintaining a “B” average; completion of math, science, English, social studies, and foreign language classes every year; completion of mathematics through Pre-Calculus; completion of at least nine (9) AP classes: one in the 9thgrade, two in the 10thgrade , and three in each of the 11thand 12thgrade years. 9th graders must take AP World History. 10th graders must take AP European History and AP English Language. Students MUST take their required AP classes at school with a classroom teacher. Online or FLVS classes cannot be taken instead of required core courses with the exception of foreign language. Transfering students, or students entering the academy in higher grade levels may be required to take online or FLVS pre-requisite math or science classes in order to qualify for correct placement in their grade level or the IB Diploma Programme. Students who enter the IB Diploma Programme in 11thgrade also meet the Scholars requirements and are considered members of the Scholars Academy. The IB Diploma Programme has its own application process and requirements.
Students who wish to enter the Scholars Academy in 10thgrade or above, including current students of MBSH, must also complete an application for upper grade placement. Applications are available online and reviewed by the Scholars Office. No student will be placed in the Scholars Academy until the required prerequisite classes for that grade level are completed. If a student chooses to complete pre-requisite math or science classes through FLVS, they must sign a contract and be approved for the class by their current counselor. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REGISTER FOR MULTIPLE CORE CLASSES DURING THE SCHOOL DAY IN ORDER TO CATCH UP. FLVS classes must be done on the student’s own time and completed at least two weeks prior to the opening of the school year in order to be moved into the Academy for that school year.
Completion of a foreign language class prior to 9thgrade is not required. Many students take a level one class prior to high school to be better prepared for an advanced level or the IB Programme. Consideration should be given to the language choice for the IB Programme, as not all languages are currently available.
A student does not have to be a member of the Scholars Academy in order to apply for the IB Diploma Programme. Students who enroll in a class beyond the first day, due to late registration or transfer are expected to catch up on their own time. Students and parents are advised to contact the Scholars Office for additional information concerning program requirements and choices.
