    GOAL: The purpose of this course is for students to further develop necessary skills learned in level two in order to be able to communicate in the Portuguese language. This course is designed also to develop cultural awareness and knowledge of Brazilian culture, geography, and history.

    COURSE TOPICS: The components of the curriculum for this course are:

              A.    Language development: Students will demonstrate knowledge and application of specific vocabulary in Portuguese. The lessons were conceived to engage students interest by applying personal, social, professional and cultural topics.

    B.     Communicative Competence: Students will use Portuguese as a medium of expression in the classroom by participating in role plays and debates about controversial issues, asking questions, communicating messages, making oral presentations, etc.

    C.   Literacy Skills: Students will demonstrate reading comprehension of passages containing familiar and unfamiliar vocabulary and structure; reading materials include newspapers, magazines, poetry, lyrics of songs, recipes, research materials, short stories, novels, etc

    D.   Composition: Students will use writing strategies in a variety of formal and informal contexts to include letter to pen pal, compositions, writing of School Portuguese newspaper, etc.

    E.      Cultural Awareness: Students will demonstrate awareness of Brazilian and Portuguese cultures on topics, such as, typical foods, major holidays, festivals, customs, and historical events as well as participate on the organization of a Brazilian Carnival show.

    SOME TECHNIQUES AND ACTIVITIES:  Games, videos and movies, interviews/guest speakers, research and oral presentation, artwork, debates, field trips to Brazilian restaurants, role playing, multimedia use, cooking projects, songs, organization of cultural events and a Portuguese/English newspaper etc.                                                    

    GRADING CRITERIA:  Students will be evaluated on a weekly basis. Evaluation includes:

    • oral and written quizzes 20% each
    • projects 30%
    • tests 30%
    • homework 10%
    • classwork 10%

     

    A.              The GPA required for graduation is 2.0

    B.               Grading scale:

                 90 - 100  = A                                      A = 4 points

                 80 - 89    = B                                      B = 3 points

                 70 - 79    = C                                      C = 2 points

                  60 - 69   = D                                      D = 1 point

                 00 - 59     =F                                       F = 0 point

    C.            The points for all grades received during the grading period are added. The total is then divided by the number of grades given. The final grade is determined by the following scale:

      3.5 - 4.0 =  A 

      2.5 -3.49   =  B 

      1.50-2.49  =  C  

    1.0-1.49   =  D 

                    .9 and below = F                                      

    BOOKS AND DICTIONARY: TRAVESSIA I and II- textbook and workbook. Students must acquire a good bilingual dictionary to use at home.
